Renault has unveiled the latest addition to its SUV lineup, the Renault Rafale, a hybrid SUV coupe designed to make a significant impact in a competitive market. Promising outstanding fuel efficiency and up to 296bhp, the Rafale aims to offer an impressive blend of performance and economy.
Pricing and Variants
Starting at £38,195, the entry-level Rafale features a 197bhp powertrain that combines a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine with two electric motors and a clutchless automatic ‘dog box’ transmission. The Rafale is available in three trim levels, each offering a range of high-tech features, including Google-powered infotainment and the option of a variable tint Solarbay glass roof.
Design and Dimensions
The Rafale showcases Renault's new design language, measuring 4710mm in length, 1860mm in width, and 1610mm in height. Despite its considerable size, the vehicle's sporty design elements, such as a sloping roofline and a wide stance, contribute to a dynamic appearance. The front end features Renault’s latest headlight signature, first seen on the updated Clio.
Powertrain and Performance
Built on the Renault group's CMF-CD architecture, the Rafale offers two E-Tech petrol-electric hybrid powertrains. Available now for order, the 197bhp variant boasts an impressive 60.1mpg and emits just 105g/km of CO2, with a total claimed range of up to 638 miles. The combustion engine employs the Miller cycle and features advanced technologies for enhanced efficiency, while the primary electric motor delivers 50kW (67bhp) and 151lb-ft of torque.
A secondary electric motor functions as a starter generator and powers the clutchless automatic transmission, adding 25kW (33.5bhp) and 37lb-ft of torque. The front-wheel-drive Rafale can accelerate from 0-62mph in 8.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 111mph.
For those seeking more power, a 296bhp Rafale E-Tech 4×4 model will be available later in 2024. This all-wheel-drive version will feature the ‘4Control Advanced four-wheel steering’ system, which adjusts the rear axle by 1 or 5 degrees depending on the vehicle's speed, enhancing handling and stability.
Trim Levels and Standard Features
The Rafale comes in three trim levels: Techno, Techno Esprit Alpine, and Iconic Esprit Alpine. Standard features across all models include 20-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, a 12.3-inch driver display, a 12.0-inch infotainment screen, a six-speaker hi-fi system, wireless phone charging, dual-zone air conditioning, front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, and regen paddles on the steering wheel.
The Techno Esprit Alpine trim adds unique wheel designs, Esprit Alpine exterior styling, matrix LED headlights, and four-wheel steering. Inside, it features 61% recycled Alcantara upholstery with an illuminated Alpine logo, six-way electric front seats with heating and a massage function for the driver, a rear armrest with charging ports, and a head-up display.
The top-tier Iconic Esprit Alpine trim includes the innovative Solarbay glass roof with AmpliSky technology, offering adjustable tinting in four modes controlled by voice. Additional features include logo puddle lamps, electric folding mirrors, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, hands-free parking, and a 360-degree camera system.
Advanced Technology
All Rafale models are equipped with the OpenR infotainment system powered by Google, which includes Google Assistant, Google Maps, and access to up to 50 apps. Furthermore, Renault has confirmed that the Rafale will come with up to 32 bits of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), ensuring a high level of safety and convenience.
The Renault Rafale is set to make a strong entry into the hybrid SUV market, offering a blend of style, performance, and cutting-edge technology. With deliveries starting in July 2024, it’s poised to attract a wide range of customers looking for a versatile and efficient SUV.
